choice... or chance?

in doing some digging for an old paper from undergrad days gone-by, I ran across this.
Someone had it emailed to me my freshman year in college and I liked it so much that I not only printed it out and posted it to my hot pink and zebra corkboard #collegeinearlymilleniumyears but I also took the time to retype it so it wouldnt be lost.

I also found a lot of old saved IM conversations with B. some that reassure me I wasnt crazy/didnt just dream up that it was really that good back then. and some that make the older, wiser?, more jaded? me cringe a bit on how immature and black/white I was about my relationships.

so for what it's worth, I'll try to keep this in mind. for the next time I fall in love :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Choice or Chance?

When we meet the right person to love, when we're at the right place at the right time, that's chance.

When you meet someone you're attracted to, that's not a choice. That's chance.

Being caught up in a moment (and there are a lot of couples who get together because of this)That's also a chance.

The difference is what happens afterwards…
Will you take that infatuation, that crush,
or that mind- blowing attraction to the next level?
That's when all sanity comes back…
You have to sit down and contemplate
whether you want to make this into a concrete relationship or just a fling.

If you decide to love a person, even with his faults, that's not a chance. That's choice

When you choose to be with a person, no matter what, that's choice.

Even if you know there are many people out there who are more attractive, smarter, and richer than your mate, and yet, you decide to love your mate just the same, that's choice

Infatuation, crushes, and attraction come to us by chance.
But true love that lasts is truly a choice. A choice that we make…

Regarding soulmates, there's a beautiful movie quote that I believe is so true about this:
"Fate brings you together, but it's still up to you to make it happen."

I believe that soulmates do exist, that there is truly someone made for you.
But it's still up to you to make the choice if you're going to do something about it or not.

We may meet our soulmates by chance, but loving and staying with our soulmate is still a choice we have to make.

We came to the world not by finding someone perfect to love, BUT to learn how to love an imperfect person perfectly.

happy hump day?

I cried last night.

...

...

...

Over a Twix candy bar.

I have no idea how it ended up in my fridge (its not my favorite candy bar and I never buy full-size candy!)
except to think the following possibilities

(a) magical yet creepy Elf on a Shelf wanted to save mankind from the wrath of Kat,

(b) that Willy Wonka did invent that crazy candybar-sending TV
and it appeared in my house,

(c) our benevolent God decided to throw me a frickin bone. (as compared to the mostly misery thats been present lately)

Anyways, when I found it,
I seriously did Chandler's happy dance < Chandler Happy Dance GIF>
in my kitchen and shed a few tears.

And then I made myself go to gym class in exchange for the miraculous gift :)

Unbeknownst to me at the time, we had tornado weather here at 7am
(apparently I have retained my mad sleeping skills from college am just as good at sleeping through fire alarms/ tornado weather & warnings as I was at OU).

All I knew is that I could hear things being knocked over outside and the wind was going SIDEWAYS~~~

And I was NOT going out in it. So I email that I will be in later that morning. Only to have my phone blow up with National Weather alerts for my area saying "tornado weather… seek shelter"

So now that I'm finally at work, I'm wondering if we get to claim "hazardous weather/working conditions" or if I have to use PTO ;)

Anyways… I got in my car this morning and almost gagged.

It smells like stinky gym tennis shoes + old broccoli

I have no idea where or why. It didn't smell like that yesterday or on the way to the gym.

All I could think about was "Grumpy Old Men" when Jack throws a fish into Walter's old Suburban and he doesn't find it for a week!

Pretty sure my facial expression was comparable. Or like that guy's….

so NOT looking forward to cleaning out my car in the rain today.
I'm secretly hoping that the smell disappears as fast and mysteriously as it appeared!!!

Sadly, I regret to report that the cry-inducing Twix was not enough to overpower the stronghold the BMH have induced on my body.

So I stopped for gas station on my way to work and bought 3 things….. a cappuccino (duh), Cheeto puffs (small victory in convincing myself to buy the small bag!), and coconut M-n-Ms.

Yeah………………. I definitely got a empathetic look from the female clerk this morning.

Pretty sure she knew what's up ;)

That is all. Thanks for letting me "purge the crazy".

saw'em off (or tried to....damn t-sips)

so........ the boy decided to spring on me that I would be meeting his friends prior to last meeting of t.u./Aggies football game (damn you Deloss)here in the South, for a 7pm game against your bitter rival, the BBQ pit starts at dawn.. and the drinking isnt far behind.

after a screwdriver at 11am, you'd feel pretty chatty too

and having steaks offered to you several times (even though I tried declining due to not being an expected guest) doesnt hurt either ;)

but of course, I royally suck at daytime drinking.
*really I am awful at extended-time, paced activity. thus why I run 5ks and not marathons!

and got upset due to lack of affection/general progress in our dating relationship

and with all other emotions due to gma #1 dying this week, I cried.

i really hope his friends didnt see.
still pretty mortified. but you cant get a do-over so I guess if he likes me enough, he'll stick around!

real friends...

"real friends know how crazy you really are….. and still choose to be seen in public with you."

and as a bonus ---- a fun Venn diagram!

love you long time

been so long. too long. too many thoughts, too many emotions. too many hurts. sometimes its just all too much.
Sometimes when you look back at all the endings, you have to hope when you're with the one that doesn't end - that you can laugh about all the ones that weren't.
right now it just seems like a giant train wreck.
my panic attacks make traveling impossible. so tired of treadmills without results. so wanting to feel loved by someone other than the friends and family that have to. so lonely, and yet so unsure of capacity to be a "couple" again.
do i have what it takes to give unselfishly, to not whiny or belittle, to curb my OCD tendencies for the good of another. i dont have the answers to those questions.
and i dont really know that i'm looking for them
I guess I'm just hoping that if its not to be, God slaps me upside the head with it and makes it painfully obvious
until then, continued secret hope, yoyo btwn happy and single --to-- alone and despair.

Lord I hope its just hormones that make me this out of whack...

if you've got the money, honey - i've got the time.

sweet Jesus I own a LOT of crap!!!
i should have paid someone to pack and move all of my stuff. goodness gracious - you'd think after 3x of moving in college, plus 2 apt moves - that I would be a minimalist!

drinking and packing was a GREAT idea (i reserve the right to disagree tomorrow)
however, tequila was a BAD choice.

sometimes I find it's better to be somebody else

so much to say, so much to say, so much to say, so much to say
'Cos here we have been standing for a long long time
can't see the light
treading trodden trails for a long long time.........."

sooooo much has happened. and i've been such a bad blogger (and friend to myself) for falling so far behind. if i could shake my finger at myself like my grammy used to, i would ;-)

anywho. short story. 5 month relationship flopped. made out w/ a friend. started to date a different friend. make-out friend no longer speaking to me - not really sure why. fell really hard and fast for 2nd "dating" friend (holding back feelings for 2 years makes that pretty easy). now he's not sure exclusive relationship is "best for both of us", and i am building the walls back up.
on the upside - 1 semester of grad classes down. only 6 bigillion left.

back-dating posts will occur as time permits...

side note - WAYY freakin excited about tequila Thursday this week :-D

ATTN Hallmark - you need new writers!

greeting cards are pure crap. they're cliche, expensive ($5 for a card!?!? that doesnt even sing!!!), and the "greetings" inside are completely out-of-touch with modern colloquialisms.

so i'm making some suggestions for new Hallmark cards:

"congratulations on the baby you weren't really "expecting". now as soon as you find out the gender, and who the father is - you'll be set on the path to being a successful mommy."
"congratulations. you have managed to pass a globally sub-par course of education to graduate with a high school diploma. you're now ready to embark upon the world with a set of minimal skills that only make you employable in food service, Wal-Mart, or call centers. you have made a real accomplishment & are now truly successful. here's $20 - happy graduation day."
"you managed to procreate AND stay married for a whole year without murdering each other or anyone else. in that order. congrats and happy anniversary"
"i have no balls to portray my actual Christmas sentiments or other religous beliefs during this time of the year. So i've opted to go with a generic, politically-correct cop-out card that is supposedly designed by a kid with cancer but really was the winning entry for the State Prison's holiday card decoration contest in 1989. Happy Holidays to my fellow apathetic cowards"
"You're my dead-beat dad who has so far only contributed inferior genes, and will only contribute to me becoming another emotional fcuktard in the near future. thanks and Happy Fathers Day. oh, and try paying some child support once in a while"

"i want to sleep with you but cant bother to care enough to actually say the words "i love you" or commit to you in any true fashion . So i bought you a wilted bouquet of 5 roses, last year's left-over box of crappy chocolates and this $8 card on the hope that you'll pity my emotional hang-ups enough to sleep with me. that or get wasted on cheap pink Andre that you dont notice if I last an impressive 1.73 minutes. Happy Valentine's Day"

We the People find these truths to be self-evident

in the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness (thank you founding fathers) - which for single gals usually consists of the crapshoot known as dating - one is inevitably confronted with the existential question of "is there just ONE right person meant for you?"

if "YES" - how do you know who he is? have you already met him? what if you accidentally dumped the ONE person you are supposed to spend THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WITH!?!?!

once upon a time, I believed there was only one person for each of us. after the debalacle of 2002, i'm jaded enough to know better.

so, for the more logical (fingers crossed) answer of "NO" -
how do you know which person is the right person for this time in your life?
at what point, does that person cease to exist to be the "right" person for your current situation?
and how do you know when it is the right person for the rest of your life... not just another learning curve?
does someone who you care for and love but maybe not as passionately/iNsAnElY as the 3yr disaster mean that they're not the right perosn for you?
and when do you KNOW that he's the one for you? the point where you're sure that you and this person should be together. that it will all be okay. that ya'll will stick together, for better and for worse. that you'll make it work. that you'll be happy together.

and at what point do any of these questions get answered....

i wish i knew

i'm thankful for....

i'm thankful for my family. very, VERY thankful

after spending the holiday with SO's (significant other) family. I realized and learned some very important thing.
  • (1) 40 ppl eating wayyy too much in a house w/3 bathrooms is NOT a good idea.
i did some serious dancing while waiting my turn
  • (2)there ARE indeed families weirder and more messed-up than mine
  • (3) sleeping with the bf in his bed, in his house when his dad is staying there too, is still incredibly awkward. even at 25 years old. even though you both slept in long pajamas, on opposite sides of the bed, with absolutely no physical contact between your bodies, for fear of the bed squeaking.
  • (4) alcohol makes it all better. esp when laughing at 50 yr olds who come home smashed at 11pm, the day before Turkey Day

frzn turkey bowling is ALWAYS a good idea

case of the crazies

Anyone ever watched the hilarious quirky comedy Scrubs? If so you know Elliot – the girl that the adorable Zach Braff character is in (and out of) love with.

That girl has ISSUES. You name it – she’s obsessing over it, paranoid about it, or inappropriately sharing about it (often with complete strangers).
Now I can't say that I “relate” to everything that she goes through (or puts herself through)…but there’s a lot about women that men can take from this girl, while not gagging through Dr Phil or Oprah
[*side note* “Girls Next Door” does not count as a window into the thoughts of “real women”]

Point-in-case: Elliot’s an independent woman – making her own moola, while kicking ass (sometimes her own) and taking names. When, I ask you, does she turn into an emotional, clinging wet blanket …. when she falls IN LOVE!!!

There is something about falling in love, trusting someone that makes you vulnerable in ways you never dreamed possible. I’m talking about love, people, not sex. We all know sex makes you vulnerable – someone see you naked (if you’re doing it right)… and everyone has body issues. There’s technique to worry about, orgasms, staying afterwards, morning breath, and awkward goodbyes.
Love, however, entails feeling SO MUCH about this person that its almost sensory over-load…and believing that they love you back just as much. Love is so much that I can’t even get into it or even explain it in words because I would lose any hope of a focused train of thought (if I haven’t already). You know what love is… most of you have experienced it. If not, hope to God that you do find it at least once in your life… it’s horrible / wonderful / miserable / exhilarating all at once… and there is absolutely nothing like it in the entire world.
(keep in mind that this is coming from a woman jaded by a broken several year-long relationship… and I’m STILL saying this)

Elliot falls in love with Rick Schroeder who’s character’s name I cant remember (something Flowers). In her quest to make, keep, and maintain this relationship, she hides her “quirks”. Random inappropriate stupid thoughts/actions that are part of who she is. The point is that she hides it from him until she just can’t - and then it starts spilling over on people throughout the hospital.

Now the truth in that is that every woman at some point in some relationship has hidden part of who she is. Who hasn’t felt like you need to hide those “crazy” parts of you so that he can get to know because you just KNOW that if he gets to REALLY know you – those crazies won’t matter. Whether its alphabetizing your DVDs, arranging your closet by colors, wearing underwear with days of the week on it, or obsessively checking under the bed every night – there’s a “crazy” part in each of us.
I personally have been to both extremes while in love. 1st serious boyfriend – I was miss independent until I fell head over heels for him. As I envisioned our life together and matching monogrammed towels, things began to unravel. After one particularly impassioned argument, he informed me that my independence that he loved so much about me was gone and that my clingy, emotional-needy dependence on him was too much. Here I was believing that this guy was The One – how I loved being with him every day, talking to him every night, spending weekends and holidays together …only to be brutally faced with his version of me being “clingy”. Talk about harsh reality.
Zoom forward to rebound boyfriend – determined to keep my independence, I drove myself everywhere, refused to get attached to his family or spend any holidays with them. I spent weekends alone after assuring him how great it was that he go fishing with the guys, or to that concert. At this extreme, I was in a relationship and still felt alone. Worse yet – I was keeping those “crazies” of wanting to be with him and not telling him for fear of being “clingy”. Needless to say, when we broke up – he told me that he felt like I never let my guard down – and that I didn’t seem to want to be a part of his life and family.

hopefully my next turn on the relationship merry-go-round – I’ll manage to keep the balance. Fall in love, be with him, but keep my girlfriends so that I don’t become an emotional mess on the times we can’t be together – or to just enjoy time apart. I’m also not gonna keep all MY “crazies” in. If he can’t deal with my color-coded pantry organization system, he’s just not worth it. There’s a song playing on country radio called “crazy like you” by Josh Grider. It’s pretty much exactly how I feel about finding that guy -
"I say everybody's crazy so what you need to do You need to find somebody crazy like you Someone you can fuss and fight with And when you make up then you can love all night with Someone who shares your particular point of view Oh they're bound to be crazy, just make sure they're crazy like you"

if nothing else - as Samantha says - "the crazy ones get all the good pills" ;-)
